Children are a special part of the ministry at Hibben. Our Children's Ministry includes a number of programs for all children starting as infants and going through the 6th grade. Bible study, which provides knowledge, understanding and application, is the foundation of our ministry. Our Wednesday afternoon program provides fellowship to foster openness, trust, and sharing.
This page contains current information on all issues concerning children at Hibben including Sunday School, Wednesday Children's Program, Children's Church, Special Events and any Notices to parents.
There are many exciting things planned for the 2010-2011 school year. If you would like to join us in our activities, come to Sunday School and/or our Wednesday Program or contact Elizabeth Skogman, Hibben's Director of Youth & Children's Ministry, at (843) 884-9761 or via our Contacts page email.
Sunday School
Sunday School classes are offered for children of all ages beginning with infants and going through the 6th grade. Hibben uses a Cokesbury curriculum series that offers age-appropriate resources and compliments the Methodist calendar. The various Sunday classes along with their location are listed in the right column of this page.
Children's Church
Children's Church is a fun and exciting time of kid-friendly worship. Music, crafts, drama, and stories are used to help children worship God. Children's Church is lead by Safe Sanctuary certified adults, and two parents (parents are also Safe Sanctuary certified), are asked to assist each Sunday. Every Sunday, with the exception of Christmas Sunday and Easter Sunday, the children are invited to go to Children's Church after the "Children's Moment" at the 10:30 worship service. They return from Children's Church to their families in the Sanctuary just prior to the "Benediction".
Club 56
Club 56 is a ministry designed for fifth and sixth graders. Fifth and Sixth graders can be a part of Club 56 three different ways:
Club 56 Friday Nights (6pm-8pm) in CLLC: New Fall dates will be announced soon! Stay tuned...
Club 56 Friday Night is a night of fun in which fifth and sixth graders are welcome to come to the CLLC for games, activities, dinner, and great relationship building. As a Church we believe in making Disciples of Christ, and one way to do that is through fun activities in which we can all grow closer together.
Fifth Grade Sunday School and Confirmation
Fifth Grade Sunday SChool begins at 9:15am on Sunday mornings. Fifth graders learn about Jesus and experience his love through fun activities and games. Confirmation mostly includes sixth graders who are intersted in becoming confirmed in the Church. Confirmation Class is held on Sundays at 9:15am.
Club 56 Wednesdays...Coming Soon!
During Club 56 Wednesdays, fifth and sixth graders are invited to come to the church after-school for some "hang out" time, time to finish homework, time to play in the gym, and time to gather for "Grapple" which is a program in which we grapple with today's "tween" issues, and what God's Word says. At 5pm on Wednesdays, fifth and sixth graders spend time in music, experiencing the joy of making music for Jesus Christ. Club 56 Wednesdays end at 5:30pm.
There are no Club 56 Wednesdays on days in which there are Early Dismissals in Charleston County Schools.
Nursery
Nursery is provided for every church sponsored event and most children's events. Our staff of loving adult care givers are all CPR trained for infants. They are assisted by responsible adults and youth volunteers. Beepers are available to parents using the nursery in case they need to be contacted. Each child is signed in and released only to their parents or guardian.
Confirmation Class

This class is held annually to help young persons, ages 12 (6th grade) and over, to understand and affirm their faith.
Confirmation 6th grade and Confirmation 7th grade both take place during the Sunday School hour. The 6th grade year focuses on learning how to navigate through the Bible, as well as learning what our United Methodist vows of committing ourselves to our church through our Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness really mean. The class will go on a retreat to Epworth-By-The-Sea United Methodist Retreat Center on St. Simons Island, Georgia, for a weekend of learning and relationship building.
The 7th grade year follows the "Claim the Name" curriculum from Cokesbury. They will learn the history of United Methodism, as well as what we as United Methodists say we believe about God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and the many doctrines of our denominations. The 7th graders go on a spiritual life retreat where they focus on their commitment to "Claiming the Name" of Jesus Christ as their own when they become confirmed in May on their 7th grade year.

Vacation Bible School
Each summer, Hibben holds a week long Vacation Bible School (VBS) for ages 3 years through 5th grade. Each day of VBS is filled with songs, stories, crafts, food and fun as the children get to know more about God and his love. Hibben's VBS is open to the community.
During the summer of 2010, we set sail for VBS fun on the HIGH SEAS! Kids felt the sea spray on their face as sails snap overhead. They experienced the deep rolling waters of God’s love. It’s easily the best time they had all summer.
Stay tuned for details of VBS, 2011!
